The Right Words for Today's Business

Excerpt from "Hispanic Heritage Reception"
Presented by R. Steve Letbetter, President, Chairman & CEO Reliant Energy
September 2000

The Influence of Hispanics in American culture is woven throughout the fabric of our society. In Texas, our culture, our history, language, food, architecture, art, music, literature and dance have all been overwhelmingly influenced by Hispanics.

For many years we have been involved in Hispanic service organizations that have provided education, training, networking, employment and business opportunities within the Latino community....The need for improved educational attainment among members of the Hispanic community, an increasingly influential population, is of paramount importance in today's global community.......

While we celebrate Hispanic Heritage for just one month each year, there are the other eleven months of the year where we, at Reliant Energy, continue to give our time, our energy and our hearts to make sure programs like those of the Chicano Family Center succeed.....

When former President Reagan signed the bill on August 17, 1988, creating Hispanic Heritage Month, he did so with the intention that it be used to recognize and honor the many contributions of Hispanics to our country.

More than five hundred years worth of contributions.

Those contributions have made an indelible mark on the history and culture of the entire United States.

As former President Bush said, "Perhaps no single ethnic group has had as profound an impact upon our nation as Hispanic America. From the days of the first explorers in what is now Florida, Texas and California, the Hispanic people have played a major role in taming this vast country and developing its abundant resources."

Reliant Energy is proud to be a participant in this celebration and we are very proud to be a part of the Hispanic community.

Muchas gracias mis amigos (Thank you my friends)
