The Right Words for Today's Business

Power Card Challenge
Powerful Pep Rally Press Conference
August 28, 2001

Remarks by R. Steve Letbetter
Chairman, President & CEO Reliant Energy

Over the past three years, more than 600,000 students and adults have been empowered to travel to the far corners of the globe. They can stand on the mountains of Peru, explore the deepest parts of Africa, ride on the back of a winged horse or travel to universes far beyond the Milky Way.

They can fight battles with George Patton, Joan of Arc and Napoleon. They will discover radioactivity with Madame Curie, the cure for polio with Jonas Salk and electricity with Benjamin Franklin.

They will accomplish these travels, feats and discoveries through the power of the Houston Library Power Card. And, we at Reliant Energy are extremely proud to have been a part of this program’s huge success.

The initiative to put a card into every child's hand in Houston has not only met our expectations, but has impacted nationally, the effort to increase public library awareness.

Standing behind this effort allows us to provide a necessary and valuable resource to our community -- the education of our children and the enhanced learning of our adult population.

What this means for Reliant Energy is a community dedicated to the pursuit of education. Our employees have been and continue to be inspired by the dedication and enthusiasm of library staff members.

Throughout the past three years, the Houston Public library staff has gone above and beyond all expectations to ensure the extraordinary success of this program. They are real-life heroes, whose spirit, energy and commitment have set a standard for years to come.

Our company has long been known for its dedication in giving back to our community. And with each child who holds a Power Card in his hand, we are proud to say we had a part in that outstanding effort.

Those who carry with them today a Houston Public Library Power Card can be called explorers, inventors, magicians, detectives, kings and queens.

Who will those Power Card holders be tomorrow? They will be managers and mayors, senators and congressmen, vice presidents and presidents.

They may even be customer service representatives, linemen, accountants, traders or CEOs. But whatever we call them, they are today our most valuable resource -- our children.

And, as in the past three years, we will continue to serve as a proud partner with the Houston Public Library staff as they achieve their goal of literacy and education for our community.

Thank you.
